I own a small business and the accounting tasks have become burdensome and time consuming. When should I think about outsourcing my accounting work?

Absolutely. For many small businesses, nonprofits and government agencies, the cost in both time and money for recruiting, training and keeping qualified accounting professionals can be overwhelming. Contract staffing allows you to reduce overhead costs while gaining the peace of mind that professional bookkeeping and accounting services are always at hand.

I run a small business but need help with my bookkeeping, particularly QuickBooks – where do I go for help?

User friendly accounting programs, like QuickBooks, are a blessing for small business owners accustomed to keeping their books manually or on spreadsheet programs. But because it’s so easy to get up and running with the basics, many business owners use only a fraction of the software’s capabilities. Some use QuickBooks for a specific aspect of their business, like invoicing and writing checks, but never investigate to see what else the software can do to simplify their recordkeeping. QuickBooks also has general ledger capability, payroll, check-writing, customer and vendor management capabilities and a variety of other enhancements to produce financial statements, reconcile accounts, prepare tax filings, track information by cost center, revenue center or line of business, and generally manage the business. Donnelly-Boland and Associates has six QuickBooks ProAdvisors on staff – ready to help you get the best use out of QuickBooks and manage your business efficiently!

What types of tax credits are available to small businesses?

For small businesses that are considering capital investments, the following federal tax credits should be considered:

  • Disabled Access Credits for expenditures to provide accessibility to individuals with disabilities,
  • Alternative Vehicle Credits, which include credits for vehicles that utilize hybrid, fuel cell or other alternative fuel technology.

In addition to these federal credits, Pennsylvania offers an educational improvement tax credit to businesses contributing to a qualified Scholarship Organization, an Educational Improvement Organization, and/or a Pre-Kindergarten Scholarship Organization. Small businesses can also expense purchases of qualified personal property such as computers, equipment, furniture and certain vehicles. The annual limit for these purchases has increased to $112,000 for 2007. For more information on how to you can reduce your tax liability with any of these strategies, contact Donnelly-Boland and Associations. Donnelly-Boland and Associates has Certified Public Accountants on staff to answer your questions and to provide tax planning services to decrease your tax liability.
